Left Behind
Summary of the article. This article is about the uproar in the country about the Supreme Court’s decision regarding same-sex marriage. Lesbians and gays feel that they are being discriminated against because Christian florist, bakers and photographers will not do work for them. These Christians are now being persecuted and taken to court or sued for their beliefs and standards. Each side is taking a stance against discrimination, but each side is discriminating against the other.
How does the story relate to oppression/discrimination? The basis of this story is discrimination. Lesbians and gays feel that they are not having their rights upheld. Christians are being discriminated against because they are standing up for their religious beliefs.
Who is oppressed? In my opinion, Christians are the ones being oppressed and discriminated against.
Who is oppressing? The gay and lesbian community is persecuting those that may not agree with their lifestyle, namely Christians.
How are they oppressed? What type of oppression/discrimination is involved? Christians are being singled out by the gay and lesbian community. Christians are being told that their beliefs do not matter. That is a violation of the Christian’s beliefs and right to practice their religion freely. They are being persecuted for their stance that marriage is and always will be between a man and a woman according to God.
Explore the significance in our society? What are the implications for this oppression? What does this say about the values of our society? Our society is saying that it is okay to persecute Christians, but not gays or lesbians. This says that our society has a double standard and that the lives of Christians do not hold value.
What was my personal reaction? Explore thoroughly. What aspects of my own socialization have led me to this reaction? I am a Christian. I think that it is crazy that these Christians are being sued. In my opinion, gays and lesbians are seeking out Christians to persecute. They approach the Christian to perform a service for them and when they decline they stir up a stink. There are other florists, bakers and photographers out there and some of them are even gay and would be more than happy to serve them. I do not agree with the homosexual lifestyle and would not cater their special event either. This is just another attempt for the homosexual community to bring more attention to themselves and say that Christians are not being nice to them.
What did I learn? I learned that the persecution of Christians will probably get worse because of the Supreme Court’s decision. I am not saying that homosexuals are not persecuted. However, when do I, as a Christian, get to stop being persecuted? I do not think anyone is being left behind, but Christians. I learned that I must be willing to stand up for my beliefs and I am ready.
